Apple Notebooks are among the sturdiest and fastest portable computers available.

Powerbooks and iBooks process more video, audio and Photo's than any average PC, as a result they demand lots of RAM and Solid Hard Drives.

The great part about Apple Computers is that they come with huge fast hard drives and oodles of Ram when you buy them from the store, the interesting part though, is that after two years, the powerbooks Processor and Ram are still fantastic at processing all that media that you work with, your Photography projects and your Final Cut Projects, but the Hard drive is now rather small for your needs, or even worse, it begins to show its age by misbehavin with some of your files.

Corrupt files, Random Application Crashes and Slowdown, Unstable system behavior, these are all signs of a potentially failing hard drive. Its important to scan your disk frequently with Disk Utility, and even if your Disk passes Disk Utilities tests, you're well advised to run some of the Tech Tool tests on your hard drive, Tech Tool costs a few dollars but can detect Hard Drive errors earlier than Disk Utility and save your important files.

Another important thing to remember about your notebooks hard drive is Backing Up. Backing Up is one of the most important things you can do with your computer (after Creating Great Movies, Literature and Amazing Photo's), For a Super Easy Way to Backup, Visit Apple's Support Site by Clicking Here and read what they tell you. Also make sure to download their Backup 3 software, non .mac members are limited to three 100mb backups, this will give you a taste of the ease of use that Apple's Backup software provides. They only offer Backup as a part of .mac membership, but at $99 dollars per year for an individual plan or $179 dollars for a five pack of .mac memberships, this Backup software just shows another reason why you need a .mac account.

If you maintain regular backups then a hard drive replacement will be a simple affair, remember that you'll need your original install disks to restore Mac OS X to your computer after a new hard drive surgery, and also hang on to all your serial numbers for third party software like Photoshop and Dreamweaver.
