Continue reading for excerpts from the Chronicle article on computer maintenance service and quality in San Francisco, my favorite quote is by Robert Krughoff, president of the Bay Area Consumers' Checkbook, who correctly summarizes a computers place in modern society by saying "People are more dependent on computers and they feel very strongly about their computers, You don't want it slow in getting back to you or not fixed when it comes back. Having a computer not working is like not having a refrigerator"
"In a study of 59 repair stores by Bay Area Consumers' Checkbook, CompUSA, Fry's Electronics and Best Buy all scored near the bottom based on overall performance and quality of service. The results underscore continued dissatisfaction with the computer repair industry, which has consistently ranked at the bottom of Consumers' Checkbook's 80 service categories."
Among the findings:
-- CompUSA, which was surveyed at six local stores, received a 56 percent overall performance mark. Only 19 percent rated its repair service superior.
-- Fry's Electronics was rated as superior only 21 percent of the time with an overall performance rating of 52 percent.
-- Best Buy, which makes repairs through its Geek Squad division, received an overall performance rating for five local stores of 73 percent, with 43 percent of respondents giving the company a superior rating.
-- The average overall performance rating of the 59 stores was 83 percent, with 59 percent of repair shops rated superior.
