One of the easiest fixes can be to create a new user in Mac OS X.

iPhoto, MS Office, Safari, Mail or any of the other applications (programs) that run on your Mac save data related to your personal usage including passwords, accounts and history.

Clearing these files of data, also known as plist files or preferences files is a useful method of troubleshooting and the easiest way to start with a clean slate of preferences across all your applications is to create a new user. This user will be named John Tester and he can be setup with the same privileges as your main user profile (do remember to have a full backup of your system before trying any troubleshooting, you can perform a full backup using Apple's Backup software, or a third party solution like Retrospect or SuperDuper)

Create your user by going into System Profiler,
<img class="imageStyle" alt="Picture 6" src="http://auburncom.com/AuburnCom Apple Care Repair and Maintenance San Francisco Quick Fixes/files//page10_blog_entry2_1.png"width="88" height="102"/>
entering your Administrator password,
<img class="imageStyle" alt="Picture 7" src="http://auburncom.com/AuburnCom Apple Care Repair and Maintenance San Francisco Quick Fixes/files//page10_blog_entry2_2.png"width="254" height="68"/>
clicking the plus sign
<img class="imageStyle" alt="Picture 8" src="http://auburncom.com/AuburnCom Apple Care Repair and Maintenance San Francisco Quick Fixes/files//page10_blog_entry2_3.png"width="164" height="169"/>

and filling in information for your tester profile, when finished setting up this user,
<img class="imageStyle" alt="Picture 9" src="http://auburncom.com/AuburnCom Apple Care Repair and Maintenance San Francisco Quick Fixes/files//page10_blog_entry2_4.png"width="453" height="359"/>

sign is as this test user (log your other users out first, better yet perform a restart and zap the P-ram while doing it).

Try performing some of the tasks that were causing you issues under your own user profile, e.g. If Safari wasn't opening, is it now working? or if iPhoto or Photo Booth were behaving erratically, do they perform well now?

Performing this quick step will save you time as you may find you can fulfill your needs under this new user account, you can also inform your Mac Technician (If in the Bay Area, Call us for assistance) that creating a new user helped, this will knock 15 minutes off any consulting fee!

These tips provided to save everybody time and hopefully make you love your Mac a little more, brought to you by AuburnCom, San Francisco's Favorite Friendly Mac Consultants.

Zapping the PRAM

<dc:subject>Quick Fixes</dc:subject>

Hello All,

A simple quick fix known to all Mac Users already but worth repeating, if you've got any kind of erratic behavior on your Mac, from time not being kept right to the Mac going to sleep or waking at the wrong time, Reset your Parameter Ram (or as they say Zap the P-Ram)

To do this, restart Your Mac and press down the four keys Command, Option, P and R. hold these down as the computer turns on and you'll hear your boot chime, as you continue to hold the keys down, the Mac will restart its boot process and you'll hear the second chime, this second chime is your sign that you've successfully reset the P-Ram.

Pat yourself on the back and make a nice cup of tea or coffee, when you come back to your Mac it'll have booted into OS X and you can sip your drink and discover if your reset P-Ram has solved your issue, if so, fantastic!

Remember that AuburnCom is a registered San Francisco company providing Mac Consulting, Care and Maintenance Service, you can send us an email using this handy form.

Quick Fixes

<dc:subject>Quick Fixes</dc:subject>

A simple Maxim, but true, haste makes waste, before doing anything drastic, try the quick fixes for your Mac or iPod.
